How It All Started

Before launching Dusty Compass, I spent years traveling the length and breadth of India. I stayed at breathtaking properties β€” cliffside cottages in Mussoorie, heritage mansions in Rajasthan, and quiet lake resorts in Udaipur. And while the hospitality, local cuisine, and properties themselves were outstanding, I noticed a painful trend.

Almost every single boutique owner was fighting a losing battle. They were completely invisible online. They had no working direct booking systems, their Instagram channels lay dormant or posted stock images, and their local search visibility was nonexistent.

As a result, 80% of their guest occupancy came from Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) like MakeMyTrip, Booking.com, and Goibibo. They were paying 15% to 25% of their top-line revenues just to acquire guests β€” sometimes even paying commissions to acquire repeat guests who had stayed with them before. That's when I realized: boutique hotels don't need general agencies. They need highly specialized, on-ground growth partners.

Large chain hotels (like Taj, Marriott, or Hyatt) have heavy internal corporate marketing structures and rarely make rapid pricing decisions. Budget lodges, on the other hand, don't have the margins to support custom video shoots or specialized SEO operations. Boutique properties (10 to 80 rooms) and luxury homestays have unique stories, highly involved owners, and stand to gain the most from commission-free direct booking systems.

I perform audits and shoots sequentially. Under the Scale Plan, on-ground travel shoots are pre-scheduled every 90 days. For custom consultation agreements or kickoff phases, we align travel dates immediately during our initial calls, ensuring we hit optimal seasonal visual conditions for your property.

Before checking in, we hold a detailed structure call to list room availability, establish which rooms or amenities (pool, dining, garden) will be shot, compile guest check-in parameters, and clean up local listings access. Your staff should be prepared to allocate a few hours to assist in prop setups or modeling during the vertical video shoot.
